Few recording artists possess the honesty and candor of Ann McCrary, but it's that openness that sets Ann apart from her musical peers. Because of the hardships she has endured and the hurdles she has had to jump, Ann brings a special intimacy and determination to whatever she sings. This is apparent on her debut solo album, "What Is This?" (Against The Flow Records), a project that has been a long time in the making for this seasoned artist who has weathered many personal and professional storms to bring the world this special collection of traditionally-styled gospel music.

Ann started singing at the age of two. Her father was the Rev. Samuel H. McCrary, a tenor, who was a member of the legendary gospel quartet The Fairfield Four from 1921 until his death in 1991. She cried and screamed for her mother to let her accompany her father on the road. Finally, her mother gave in and Ann followed her daddy to his road shows where he'd perform with the golden age of gospel groups such as the Caravans, the Davis Sisters and Bessie Griffin. All the women took care of little Ann on the road and Griffin even taught her to sing "Since I Met Jesus." During one service Ann wandered onto stage. "I pulled on my father's pants leg and asked if I could sing. He thought that was cute so he let me sing `Since I Met Jesus.' The people began throwing money at the stage.," she recalls. " Well, the promoter hadn't met his part of the contract so there wasn't enough money for us to get home. After those people threw that money, it was enough and Daddy never left home without me again."

But, at the age of six Ann had to enroll in school and couldn't travel with her father full-time anymore. She sang with a group called The Spiritual Four on the weekends and as a teenager joined The Baptist, Catholic & Methodist Mass Choir which recorded for Nashboro Records and earned a Grammy Award nomination for their album, "Life". Ann was the group's lead vocalist on hit songs such as their remake of Mattie Moss Clark's "Salvation Is Free." The group performed with or backed scores of country music stars. They backed up Ray Stevens on his million-seller "Everything Is Beautiful," they sang with Johnny Cash and backed Elvis Presley on several occasions.

Ann McCrary has become one of the premier session singers in Nashville having done background vocals for Kenny Rogers, Wynonna, Reba McEntire ,CeCe Winans, Donnie McClurklin, Twinkie Clark, Michael Card, Yolanda Adams and many others. She's preformed lead vocals on such hit gospel albums as "Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Crusade's Live in London", the G.M.W.A. Women of Worship where she recorded the duet "He Is Lord" with Harmony Records artist Nancy Jackson. She also sang lead on the Colorado Mass Choir album on their songs "I'm Going Away" and "Press."
